Modern medicine has ended almost all involuntary death. If your brain and body are intact, you’ll be back to normal within days. Cancer is eradicated. 3-D printers provide instant replacements for damaged organs. People's lives are continuing indefinitely. But Richard Barker doesn’t see this as progress. He sees it as playing God, destroying a cycle of life and death that has served humanity for millennia. As Richard's philosophy gains a larger following, and he pulls his family into the fold, he pushes forward with the plan he’s preaching—kill those who would have died if not for meddling doctors, and make sure they stay dead. Set as an alternate vision of today, Killing the Immortals delivers a terrifying version of reality where science has achieved one of humanity's most cherished dreams, and it’s turning into a nightmare.

The protagonist, Cain Barker, and his wife, Hannah, live in rural Mississippi on a farm her parents own and operate. Cain’s mother and his brother, Jacob’s fiancée are killed in an auto wreck in a future era where medical advances can prevent people from dying. His father, Richard, is a fundamentalist preacher, urges Cain to come to southern Georgia for the funeral. Life is never the same after Cain and Hannah arrive in Georgia.
Richard’s version of religion is “God offered you eternal rest at his side in heaven, not on earth. You have a Christian duty to die in order to return to God. If you don’t die—you’re denying God’s will.” In Richard’s church, they help those unwilling to die to move along, with the church’s blessing, complete with its own crematorium.
In biblical tradition, Cain rebels. Passive at first, he believes he can convince his father this is not the right path. However, when Richard has a heart attack, he believes this is a sign for him to return to God, and arranges to commit suicide with his sons in attendance.
If things weren’t bad enough for Cain at this point, the story dives down for reversal after reversal, sending more bodies to the crematorium. Even the ending leaves you wondering if Cain and Hanna can survive to have a HEA.

Killing the Immortals Jeff Haws 9781945768002 Books Reviews

When I discovered this book was Jeff Haw's debut piece of fiction, I was surprised. It read as though he was a seasoned writer and not the work of a novice. It was a well thought out storyline with deep, but flaws, characters that keep my interest.

The current climate in America might be the perfect set up for a book like this. With certain radical ideologies pressing to grab whatever life they have left and biotechnology making further and further strides, the storyline does not seem out of future possibilities. At its heart, this story is about family - many of the characters seemed really relatable. But told through the fast-paced and suspenseful lens of a futuristic, dystopian world where a religious group has taken mob-like control of a town.

This isn't just a great storyline, but this book presents readers with a lot of philosophical points to think about medical ethics, religion, love, morals. and more.

Truthfully, this seems like the sort of novel that would make for a great HBO series.
A wonderful and highly engaging read. My major complaint...I couldn't put the thing down! Only buy this if you want to be highly entertained with a very interesting story line.
I downloaded this as a recommendation from a friend for something to read on a long flight. It was perfect. I loved the story line and couldn't put it down. I look forward to reading more from this talented, new author.
This debut novel by Jeff Haws blew me away. He skillfully told a story full of ups and downs, twists and turns in a way that never felt contrived. The story itself kept me intrigued, eager to read more. The characters were well-developed, and the plot was one of the most original I've read in ages.

Great book! Read it soon so you can be one of the cool people who read a Jeff Haws back when he was first published.
This is a well-crafted story, full of twists and turns. The tension builds are great, and the creepy factor is high. The editing is excellent and the characterizations are spot on. Cain’s family dynamics are intriguing and believable. It is fast-paced, and never boring. No mushy middle in this!
This is the kind of book that grabs you from the first page and never lets go. What if people really could live as long as they chose? What if it was rare to be injured so severely that doctors couldn't save you- so rare that someone could live over 40 years and never experience the death of a loved one? The book brilliantly explores a world in which people never have to die- and a church that makes sure they do.
I'm just beginning chapter four of Jeff Haws' story but couldn't resist coming to leave an initial review. This is a really exceptional book! Haws' starts the story off with a sense of drama that draws you in and keeps you turning pages. There's a tautness in the writing that is delicious to read, building a suspense that holds your attention in a firm grip. The characters are well-written and believable and the story line is compelling. I can be very tough to please when it comes to fiction - I haven't read much fiction in the last several years because so much of what's available is just dreadful. This is a gem of a novel and I'm looking forward to finishing it and to reading more of Jeff Haws' work.
