The author's imagery and ability to "take you back" makes for a true respite from the ever noisey and pointless prattle going on in the news, the "reality" programs, and "The "Wives" of here and there.... whew! The often compromised value systems of today's citizenry could take a lesson from Joe Robert.....

With just enough of what we loved about the movie hero, John Wayne, and the homespun "aw, shucks" conversation (albeit formal and stilted), delivered in a cheap suit or overalls, we LOVE this guy, and really want him to WIN!! With uncomplicated vision he entertains the reader, and we are left with a sweet aftertaste and a hope for more people like him to come along and help lift us all!

One of my favorite books. Such a great example of magical realism; I have it in a writing 101 curriculum.
This book contains some of the best prose I have ever read. I was enchanted after the first few words of the first chapter, in which the author described the moon in a way that has completely reoriented my thinking about the moon. I enjoyed each story.

This book was needed for my oldest to read in school. It came in good condition with no problems
It's been ages since I've read such a well-written, humorous yet
deeply felt novel. Here's a high school teacher who's wise and caring, a part of his North Carolina rural community without being
condescending toward his less educated neighbors. The funny scenes
rise naturally and easily from the main plot during this one day.
The satirical and serious sections likewise flow smoothly as the
day's action moves on. Chappell's novel also makes a wonderful
gift for those who tire of depressing or violent stories.
Chappell is truly a gifted writer who utilizes local color narrative to convey universal truths. Character development is certainly one of his greatest gifts as a writer. I first encountered Fred Chappell (I Am One of You Forever) while training to teach Advanced Placement Literature and could see why he is part of the A.P. canon.
This is a great little story. I loved how the main character came to life. As a teacher I could relate to his feelings like they were my own, and as a reader I loved the exaggerations he used. The writing reminded me a lot of Twain. It did not get five stars from me because there were some extraneous parts that didn't seem to fit, but overall, a nice light read. I loved it.
