“It’s so nice to finally meet you,” she continued. “We’ve all heard so much about you; we’ve been watching you almost every week, yet for a while there, I think we all thought that perhaps you were a ghost yourself.” “Nope,” I said, smiling at her and noticing that the other conversation had stopped and now everyone was looking at me. “I can be scary but I’m definitely no ghost.”Ok, wow. I literally just finished the book and my emotions are still kinda raw. This series has been a non-stop rollercoaster right from the start and it doesn't look like it's gonna be slowing down anytime soon. Where this addition to the series differed from the others was, it focus' more on the ever evolving relationship between Dex and Perry. While we've always skirted the line between "will they or won't they", Perry's feelings have been clear for a very long time-she's in love with Dex, the unavailable and very much taken enigma, aka her partner in their Experiment In Terror web show. But he has also become her best friend. She trusts him above all others and is able to tell him anything and just about everything, witch is something she's never had before. Hiding her true feelings from him becomes increasingly harder as time goes by, but it's necessary if she wants to remain on the show with him, if she wants to keep him in her life. It's doesn't help that she has no earthly idea how he really feels about her. He will occasionally lead her to believe that she means more to him than she realizes, but he quickly retreats and covers it up. So spending a week with him, staying in Seattle in the apartment he shares with his model beauty Wine Babe girlfriend, is pure hell and tests her composure almost beyond control. We also get a lot more answers to the constant questions surrounding Dex, but as always are left with more. I don't know if we will ever get to the bottom of that man and now more than ever I just wanna know what the hell is running through his head. I wanna choke him at this point, even as I wanna jump him.
Now, just because I said we focus more on their relationship, that doesn't mean that the terror inducing thrills we have come to expect from this series are missing. You will be left with just as many chills and nightmare inducing scenes as before-though I think 'Dead Sky Morning' still holds the crown in that aspect. The paranormal is still ever present and scary as ever, Halle rivals Stephen King with her spooky scenes, but now with the addition of having your heart run through a blender.
We also get to meet some fascinating new characters with the introduction of the Shownet crew. Rebecca took me completely by surprise in the best way possible. Being the other half of Wine Babes, I fully expected to despise her if for no other reason than she was friends with Jenn, but she quickly won me over. I do hope to see more of her in the future.
Up until now, these books have never really ended on a cliffhanger-they just leave you feeling like there is so much more to be told, so much more to come. However, this book left me hanging by my fingernails wondering where do we go from here?! I am very much ready to find out.
“You’ve always been there for me, Perry,” he said with what sounded like velvet rocks in his voice. “Even from the very beginning, even if you never meant to be, even when you shouldn’t have been. You’re the light in all this madness. You’re my light."

"You're the light in all this madness. You're my light."
Lying Season was another solid addition to the Experiment in Terror series. I am really fallen in love with the characters in this book, and can't wait to read how their journey will go. There were a couple of times I was annoyed with Dex, I just wanted to smack him and tell him to look what is right in front of him. My heart broke for Perry. I can't even imagine what she is going through, but the last chapter was pretty brutal.
The filming in the mental institute was really creepy. I have watched movies that took place in mental hospitals and it always creeped me out. Karina really knows how to make the horror aspect come alive in this series. The scenes have me on the edge of my seat and I just can't stop reading. As for Dex's girlfriend Jennifer... I really hate her, I already did but I do more now. I wanted Dex to get his act together, but I think there are still a lot we don't know about him. I just can't wait to discover all of his secrets. I do love how Dex and Perry work together. They are very protective and loyal towards each other. Book 5 On Demon Wings here I come!
(Very vague spoilers, particularly if you haven’t read 1-3.)
The first three books of this series were pretty great but I don’t scare easily, so as much as I was entertained, I wasn’t moved by the spookiness as anything more than fun. I slept like a baby after seeing The Exorcist at age 8 and IT at age 11. I can’t really explain why...but this book kept me up and twitchy all night. Maybe it’s because mental illness both terrifies and intrigues me. Whatever it was, as a devoted cynic, I am always deeply impressed when someone can disturb me with paranormal goulies.
Moving on...even though I knew it wouldn’t end the way I wanted it to, I was happy to see Perry with more self confidence and making some progress in her relationship with Dex. I enjoyed the side by side comparison of Perry and Jenn. Jenn was always a mythic creature (of sorts) to our insecure little heroine, so it was nice to see Perry get some perspective. And oh how I love to hate Jenn. I have many friends who have been made miserable by their masochistic need to have a Jenn, so seeing that character diminish was...satisfying.
Overall, I love this series and will definitely recommend it to friends and family. 👻
