Captive Hearts Vol 1 Matsuri Hino Andria Cheng Books
I avoided this title for a long time because the cover art looks sappy, as does the synopsis. I didn't realize that this is actually a very funny book. Situation comedy and gag comedy, this is a comedy for boys and girls. Can you identify with Megumi, the lazy college student, who believes he's set up for life? Unexpectedly, he's thrown into servitude for a cute highschooler Suzuka. She's kind and pure hearted, and doesn't like the fact that he serves her due to a "curse" on his own family. Even Megumi doesn't know if his love for Suzuka is "real." But who cares? He enjoys serving her.

Captive Hearts Vol 1 Matsuri Hino Andria Cheng Books Reviews
Is a beautiful girl - boy tale. The boy is atractive to the girl and vice. But as allways the life and manga is not as simple as that. The fantasy take care of that. Converting the love- romance in a master -slave relation. If you like romance this tale is for you.
The series left me absolutely captive (pun very much intended, but I digress). The artwork is top notch, and the storyline is sweet and funny. It got me rooting for the main couple all the way through, even if some things threw me for a loop--of course, those loops induced laughter, so no complaints. Overall, excellent work.
I would really love it, however, if this were made into a format.
The title story "Captive Hearts" is part one of a newly released English version of Matsuri Hino's manga. Its about thievery and the results of it's greed coupled with the potential of true love. As with most mangas the main characters over act a great deal, melodramatic seems to be a key element of manga, but there are also some truly touching scenes between the two main characters Megumi Kuroishi and Suzuka Kogami. Generations ago, we are not told how many of pasted nor if generation is a time or a reproductive measurement, the Kuroishi ancestor stole from the Kogami family and was cursed to always serve them in body, heart and soul. Megumi grew up in the Kogami house where his father was the butler but never had to deal with this curse since the master's family left the country and was presumed dead for 14 years. With the only surviving member, Suzuka, returning, the curse to serve hits Megumi hard but harder still seems to be their love and Suzuka's sense of morals and ethics. It's a sweet female dominant/male submissive story that I wish there were more of in the English market. There are also two other shorter, perhaps one-shot, stories of a romantic bent. "Real Storm" looks at a schoolgirl crush and a strange teacher. "Let Time Freeze" follows two life-time friends who realize that they are in love this means they must defy her family. All three are contemporary stories though "Captive Hearts" has the potential for historical flashbacks. I was not as impressed with the two shorter stories and this is the reason for the -1 star in the rating. The art work is standard for the genres of manga I read. I look forward to other volumns.
College student Meguimi Kuroishi is leading a life of luxury. The wealthy family that his father works for disappeared in China 14 years ago and Meguimi expects to inherit the estate when his father finally admits that the family is dead. Meguimi's plans are abruptly changed when 17 yo Suzuka Kogami, the only surviving family member, returns from China. Meguimi learns of the Kogami curse that requires that he obey all orders issued by the Kogami family!
The concept of a curse requiring obedience is entertaining especially since the Kogami family appears to have taken pains to make requests rather than issue orders. Suzuka was raised by adoptive Chinese parents that were not wealthy so she is not used to giving orders to servants to begin with. The most amusing scenes are when Meguimi meets Suzuka's eyes and is overcome by manservant attacks. Their relationship is complicated because Meguimi also falls in love with Suzuka. Suzuka wants him to love her because of genuine feeling rather than the side effects of a curse.
There are two major flaws with this book. The first is that the relationship becomes "love" so quickly with the manservant fits occasionally adding to the humor. I get that it was originally serialized in a magazine and the author didn't know if there would be a second issue, but.... I would have liked a little time for Meguimi to come to grips with his new status of manservant and separating his true feelings from those enforced by the curse. The second flaw is that there is really only half a book about the Captive Hearts characters. There are two unrelated bonus stories that take up nearly have the book. The stories were entertaining, but book was supposed to be about Captive Hearts, not a group of short stories written/illustrated by Matsuri Hino
As a series (total of 5 books), Captive Hearts never seemed to have a consistent story line (beyond the central curse & romance). I don't regret buying/reading all five books, but the story telling could be improved
Not as good as we thought it would be.
